How Long Does It Take To Lose 20-30 lbs?

1-3 lbs of weight loss each week is healthy

If you’re eating right and exercising right you can expect to lose 1-3 lbs of fat each week.

Of course, don’t become overly consumed with the number on the scale–it’s only a guide.

There are better ways of tracking your weight loss, like how your clothes fit.

I go into more depth on better ways to track weight loss than the scale, so check it out if you’d like.

Having said that, depending on how much extra weight you’re trying to lose and how healthy you’ve been living up to now, you may see much more substantial weight loss initially.

This is often due to your body getting rid of excess water that it’s been holding onto as a barrier to toxins in your food, as well as a result of high sodium foods.

It’s also because your body WANTS to be at a healthy weight. So the further you are from your healthiest weight, the faster your body will do whatever is necessary to get you there.

So don’t be surprised if you lose a lot more than 1-3 lbs at first.

Also, don’t be discouraged if the weight loss slows down as you get closer to your body’s ideal.

You didn’t gain it in a day, so you can’t expect to lose it in a day

Most importantly, it’s important to be patient.

After all, you didn’t gain the weight overnight (although I know at times it can feel like it).

It’s not going to disappear overnight, either.

Commit to the process.

Time flies, so commit to healthy weight loss

That last part may have seemed a bit discouraging.

But think about how fast time flies.

What were you doing on this day, 3 months ago?

Seems like yesterday, doesn’t it?

3 months from now you’ll look back on today and be thinking the same thing.

1-3 lbs a week = 12-36 lbs in 3 months.

If you commit to working out regularly and eating right then on August 21st you’ll have lost 12-36 lbs.

Not bad at all, huh?

Drastic weight loss can backfire

A word of caution:

Be careful trying any “Get Skinny Quick” schemes.

Cutting out too many calories or overdoing your workouts can actually hurt your progress in the end.

When you go these routes your body tries to protect itself by burning muscle as well as fat.

This actually slows your metabolism way down, which is what determines how fast your body burns fat.

Muscle takes energy for your body to sustain.

The more muscle you have, the easier it is to lose weight because your body is constantly burning fat in order to keep it on your body.

This is why weight training is crucial to fast fat loss.

However, if your body thinks it’s starving or not getting the fuel it needs it’ll start “trimming the fat”–which actually means trimming the muscle.

Your body will actually view your muscle as an expense on your survival and will get rid of it so that your body won’t use up what few calories it’s getting as quickly.

You can read more about the importance of muscle when trying to lose weight in this article that I wrote.

So if your goal is to lose weight and keep it off, then be patient and do it the healthy way.
